Hello I'm quite new with RetroPie, but I already got my VIDEOPAC games running.:-) Now I would like to play the origianl Arcade 'Space Invaders' but I'm confused about which System I should use to keep it simple? Should I search for MAME roms or should I search for Neo Geo roms?

MAME is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. You can find the game ROMs, BIOS ROMs and all other files needed to play games in the MESS and MAME collection on their site as both direct downloads and torrent files.

As far as I understand MAME sometimes needs a neogeo.zip bios file and Neo Geo ever needs a neogeo.zip bios file, right? I'm aware that no links are allowed here, but is it possible to post any hints from where to get the right neogeo.zip bios? I'ts all so confusing for a newbie.:-/ Regards, Roman.

Space invaders isn't a neogeo game so you don't need the neogeo bios. It works fine in mame2003, at least. You need the correct romset for the mame emulator you need to use. For mame2003, you need a mame 0.78 romset. You can get this on the most popular torrent site in 2 parts.

Within that archive, it's called invaders.zip. Put that in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/ and it should appear in the menu after you restart. For sound, you need the correct samples zip (google space invaders samples) in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/.

Thank you very much. Said in: space invaders isn't a neogeo game so you don't need the neogeo bios. This means, that I only need a neogeo bios if a game is explicitely for the Neo Geo console?

Bios

I was confused because one can read about MAME emulators '.Some ROMs may need the neogeo.zip BIOS in order to run.' It works fine in mame2003, at least. You need the correct romset for the mame emulator you need to use. For mame2003, you need a mame 0.78 romset.

Put that in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/ and it should appear in the menu after you restart. May I ask why I often hear about 'romsets'. What does this mean? I always assumend that 1 game = 1 rom = 1 file?

Or does 'romset' mean that it includes the game and the appropriate bios? For sound, you need the correct samples zip (google space invaders samples) in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/ And such 'samples zips' are never included in a 'romset'? Do I need to download samples zips separate, may be from different places? Regards, Roman. Said in: Thank you very much.

I was confused because one can read about MAME emulators '.Some ROMs may need the neogeo.zip BIOS in order to run.' Short answer: if you look at the compatibility lists, you can see what games need what bios: long answer: the neogeo was a home console (the neogeo 'AES'), and an arcade chipset (the neogeo 'MVS'), and almost every game was available on both. Since it was also an arcade system, MAME and FBA romsets include all the games using the neogeo MVS arcade chipset. These games will need the neogeo bios to run.

Please read a romset is a large archive of the complete set of games that can run on a particular version of Mame/FBA. Individual Mame/FBA game zips are often not standalone - you mostly need the whole romset on your system to ensure everything will work, as they have dependencies between each other. Invaders.zip, however, does not, so if you only want that game you need to follow my instructions above. For sound, you need the correct samples zip (google space invaders samples) in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/ And such 'samples zips' are never included in a 'romset'? Do I need to download samples zips separate? They might be included.

There's no rule. But if they're not, that's what you need to do.

Said in.you mostly need the whole romset on your system to ensure everything will work, as they have dependencies between each other. Invaders.zip, however, does not. Yeah, about that, how do you know what files are needed?
